Body Sculpting Q & A

CrossRoads Family Medicine

What is body sculpting?

Body sculpting is an umbrella term for cosmetic procedures that permanently remove fat from your body. Diet and exercise alone are often not enough to eliminate localized fat pockets. Two categories of body sculpting involve procedures used to target those problem areas: invasive and noninvasive.

Invasive body sculpting uses surgery to remove fat. Liposuction, the most common form of invasive body sculpting, has been popular since the 1980s. In liposuction, fat is sucked out through a hollow tube to sculpt and contour your body.

While the results of invasive body sculpting are more dramatic, many people are opting for noninvasive procedures due to their quicker recovery time. You can expect pain, bruising, and swelling for almost two weeks after an invasive body sculpting treatment.

You can get noninvasive body sculpting in an outpatient setting, and the treatment can often finish within an hour. It causes minimal discomfort, and results emerge slowly over a period of weeks and months.

What is SculpSure?

SculpSure® is an FDA-approved noninvasive treatment that eliminates fat cells through the use of heat lasers. A heat laser belt is wrapped around one of three approved areas:

  • Lower abdomen
  • Upper abdomen
  • Flanks

CrossRoads Family Medicine also offers under chin (submental) fat treatment using the newly available SculpSure submental attachment, allowing the doctors to target a buildup of fat cells commonly referred to as a double chin.

Results are better for people with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or less, and the procedure can take less than half an hour. Over the three months following a SculpSure treatment, your body will slowly begin to flush out the eliminated fat cells by way of your lymphatic system.

Are there any side effects?

There are few side effects from SculpSure, although it’s a newer procedure and research is ongoing. You may feel some minor tingling or pinching during the treatment, and be sore and stiff after, but overall there is little to no recovery time. On average, one 25-minute session results in 24% of fat loss in the area treated, though individual results may vary.
